UK school makes a movie of Comet Hartley

Oct 28, 2010

Recently a school in the UK contacted us who have been using our network through our partnership with Faulkes Telescope Project. It is always great to hear from people using our network. It looks like they made the most of a bad weather situation.

"We had booked to use Faulkes Telescope North to observe Comet Hartley but unfortunately the telescope was closed. Our Astronomy group decided to use the image archive and look at other people's pictures of the comet. The animation we made is of Hartley's Comet (103P). It is constructed using archived images taken by the telescope over a space of about 10 minutes. This animation gives a rough indication of how fast the comet is moving compared to the background stars. We were surprised at how much it had moved in such a short space of time.

We also have a YouTube video of this animation available.
