FLOYDS first light

Sep 2, 2011

On September 1, FLOYDS achieved first light! This is a great accomplishment for all involved! A calibration lamp were used to achieve a rough alignment and the spectra.

FLOYDS stands for the Folded Low Order whYte-pupil Double-dispersed Spectrograph. This will be the low resolution spectrograph on the 2.0m telescopes covering wavelengths between 350 and 1100 nm with a 1.2nm spectral bandwidth. It will first be tested on FTN early 2012 and then sent to FTS. This will be a completely robotic spectrograph, where very few currently exist.

The main science goal of FLOYDS is supernovae follow-up, but there will be plenty of GRBs, AGNs, and many other objects observed as well.
