LCO Wins Major NSF Grant for the Expansion of Astronomical Network
PASEA alumni are university students or school teachers from Nigeria, Cameroon, Ethiopia, Ghana, Benin, Senegal, Burkina Faso, Togo, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Alumni of the school work in groups of three to select short-timescale transient/variable targets (observable during the 2 week period over which our program runs) from publicly available alerts/databases (e.g. TNS, ATel, ASSSN CV Patol, AAVSO, ASSSN Variable Catalog). Under the guidance of career astronomers (who will be instructing remotely via Zoom and Slack) attendees will collaboratively plan and request observations using the LCO network. While waiting for their data, attendees will develop the coding, photometry and light curve analysis skills required to interpret their requested observations using datasets obtained during our 2019 LCO Educational Partnership campaign, WAISSYA.
